Round Top Barn

Sara & Jason's Unique Rustic Wedding at Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta, Maine

Sara & Jason started planning their Maine destination wedding well over a year in advance and first reached out to meet in February 2014. Planning "from away" can be challenging, but, with Sara's family roots running deep in Maine, the rocky coastline was calling them to start the next chapter of their life together beneath the beam of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, Maine. And so Sara & Jason made the trek from their home in Wisconsin to the midcoast for their Maine wedding.

I first met the two of them almost exactly one year before their wedding for their engagement session at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It was obvious to me then, after only moments of knowing them in person, that they were meant to be together.

Fast forward to their wedding day and that certainly held true. Sara & Jason are two very unique, very in love individuals and together they make the perfect match for each other. Sara wore a beautiful gown with pintucks and a hot pink underlay she added to it with the help of her family. It went well with her hot pink platform sandals and hot pink veil. Jason and his gentlemen rocked awesome, black & white wingtip shoes along with aqua details. Jason topped it all off with a very dapper hat. Their private first look overlooking the ocean was perfection. Sara sneaked up behind Jason while he was watching the seagulls flying around. He was instantly stunned and requested several twirls so he could take it all in.

Despite marrying in July, the wind was gusting so strong that we were more than a bit chilled during their ceremony at the lighthouse. The tulle decorating their handmade birch arbor was blowing around all over the place. Lighting the unity candle? Challenging, to say the least. Yet the silver lining was that the guys in suits were comfortable and Sara, dawning her gown, was as well. There has to be a bright side!

After their brief ceremony and quick portraits, we all headed back to the Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta. The Round Top Barn is one of the venues I visit most frequently and certainly one of my favorite spots. That day was certainly no different. With the event MC'ed by their family, the catering done by family, and AMAZING desserts from Moody's Diner (yes, family, too!), it was a family affair from start to finish. The entire day reflected the two of them to a T. The front lawn was covered in the widest variety that I have ever seen. It certainly drew crowds outdoors to enjoy the amazing evening weather. And, even better, they even had Nerf guns for their guests! I heard they bought out several Walmarts in the area amassing their stash. The games lasted well into the evening after they watched the always awesome sunset behind the barn.

Sara & Jason, thank you so much for letting Alan and me be there for your day. And for the Wisconsin cheese, Wisconsin beer, and even the Moody's Diner pie goodie bag! You guys are so awesome!

They already have their full gallery of images, but here is a peek at what we captured from their day. It was such a blast!

Flashback to Tarryn & Sean's Pemaquid Point Lighthouse & Round Top Farm Wedding

There are very few venues in New England that I have visited for weddings more than once; with the number that we have to chose from, I'm not surprised! But one of my favorite spots that I have returned to on several occasions would be the Damariscotta River Association's Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta, Maine.

Tomorrow will bring me back there for the third time as Sara & Jason get hitched! I am so excited! And I can't help but think of my first Round Top Barn couple, Tarryn & Sean, and their wedding on August 28, 2010. It is hard to believe that they will be celebrating five years together next month.

Tarryn started her day by getting ready at the Bradley Inn in Bristol, Maine. It is a perfect coastal Inn close by to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse where they held their ceremony. Their friends & family gathered overlooking the ocean as the two lovebirds said their vows under a perfectly blue sky with puffy, white clouds. We took their portraits at the lighthouse; Tarryn, who is afraid of heights, even put up with my request to walk out onto a rock jutting towards the ocean so that I could capture one of my favorite photos to date.

Their rustic wedding reception was held at the Round Top Barn where they celebrated with the always incredible crooning of Joe Farren. With a gorgeous view of the sunset behind the barn and frolicking with the old, rusted Mac truck (which is now long gone), it certainly was a day I'll never forget. And I'm sure Tarryn & Sean would say the same.

Here is a look back at their amazing day (complete with a bit of tweaking). What a great day it was!

Sara & Colin's Maine Wedding at Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta

I'm wrapping up Colin & Sara's full gallery this week, but I wanted to take a moment to look back at their amazing wedding less than two weeks ago at the Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta. Sara got ready in Waldoboro at their new home while Colin spent the morning of their wedding at the Newcastle Inn, an adorable bed and breakfast with gorgeous gardens and views of the water. Surrounded by their friends and family, they were both so at ease as they prepared for the official start of the next chapter of their life together. Colin gifted Sara a necklace he had made for her featuring a rock from Mount Katahdin where they got engaged (so awesome, right?). Sara gave Colin a book from 1913 entitled "Don'ts for Husbands" as well as a pocket watch with the coordinates of the Darrows Barn where they would shortly be married. I think their gifts are perfect reflections of who they are: kind, genuine, thoughtful, and a bit of humor thrown in for good measure.

Their wedding ceremony was held under the arbor that Colin made with two antique doors and architectural details that were well matched for the Darrows Barn. As nature lovers, their tree planting during their ceremony was a very well suited personal touch. With barely a dry eye around, they had their first kiss as husband and wife beneath a canopy of old growth trees in front of the barn.

The reception featured many personal touches as well from many lawn games that they had prepared to the cake and cupcakes baked by one of Colin's family members to the fir trees that they gave as gifts to their guests. One of my favorite parts was when Sara's maid of honor, who is serving in the military overseas, gave her speech through a previously recorded video. I may have been wiping a number of tears from my own eyes during it.

We ended the night by watching the sunset behind the Darrows Barn, which is one of my absolutely favorite parts of the entire Round Top property. The view is definitely one you just don't want to miss. And what a way to wrap up such a great day.

Sara & Colin, thank you for having us there to capture the day for you. I cannot believe it has come and gone so fast. It feels like just yesterday I was first talking to you both about your plans. Your hard work paid off in spades. I hope you are enjoying the newlywed glow for a long time to come!
