Portland Headlight

Carly Lou at One!

This session. Oh, my heart!

My relationship with Trish & Rob goes back several years at this point when I first photographed them for their engagement session. Then their wedding at the Spurwink Church and Mariner's Banquet Center in Portland. And then they had Carly and called for me to visit them for her newborn portraits. And then a year flew by and it was time for her first birthday session. I know it's cliché, but really... where did the year go?

Seeing the family again for another session means more to me than I could ever put into words. Watching Carly walk around, smile, look deeply at the clouds and trees around her, her whispy hair being blown around.... she is becoming such an incredible little human! I also see nuances of her dad and his family in some of her spunky moments. Her mom is in there too with her sparkly eyes and big smile.

And this post would not be complete without mentioning my love for the big ol' cocoa puff with legs... Rocky. As soon as I saw him, he got so excited and started dragging Rob along to see me. Much like Rob & Trish, Rocky and I have been buds since their engagement session and seeing him again for each session makes me smile a bit more. And it makes him jump a bit more, too. I am such a sucker for dogs!

Carly, Trish, Rob... and Rocky... thank you so much for having me capture this milestone for your family! Carly is so amazing and very lucky to be a part of such and incredible family. Love you guys!

Samantha & Ryan's First Congregational Church UCC & Woodlands Club Wedding

I'm often asked by other photographers, "How do your couples find you?" Well, the majority of the time, they find me because they have friends and family that I've had the pleasure of working with before. In the seven years I've been photographing weddings, that is by far my biggest source of clients. That's how Samantha & Ryan found me more than a year before their July 2014 wedding (Thank you, Alyssa!). And now I have Samantha & Ryan to thank for one of my latest couples to book for 2016 (So excited, Jessica & Matt!). So I thought it would be only fitting to take a look back at Samantha & Ryan's wedding from just over a year ago as I continue to update this (relatively) new blog.

Samantha & Ryan... seriously, what is not to love about these two? I first met them for coffee in an old bank vault at an Aroma Joe's in Sanford, Maine. We spent forever talking about, well, everything that you could imagine and laughing our tails off. It really was like a coffee date with old friends. Their engagement session was much the same. Lots of love and laughter as we explored Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Samantha's bridal shower at the Salt Water Grille in South Portland was an afternoon spent celebrating. And then came their wedding day on a sweltering Saturday last July.

The love between Samantha & Ryan is the stuff that fairytales are made of. The way that Ryan melts when he looks at Samantha. Samantha's glowing smile and blushing cheeks when she talks of her love for Ryan. They are made for each other. And their wedding day was a testament to that love as well as the love they have for their families.

Samantha and her ladies got ready at the classic Regency in Portland's Old Port before their ceremony at the First Congregational Church UCC in South Portland, Maine. There may have been just a few tears of joy shed prior to the ceremony. And some of them may have been mine.

After their ceremony, we took off for Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth to take their bridal party portraits along the coast. Then it was time to head to The Woodlands Club to really celebrate the newlyweds well into the night.

I am so honored to have been there to see these get hitched and am already looking forward to seeing them at Jessica & Matt's wedding next summer. I dare say that is my favorite part about referrals from past couples. I get to see my old friends again!

Samantha & Ryan, thank you so much for having me with you on your wedding day. I hope that the past year has been filled with what we all know you for: lots of love and laughter. It certainly has flown by!

Ally & Mark's Maine Wedding at Portland Headlight and Grace Restaurant in Portland

Ally & Mark made one of my dreams come true last weekend. Yes, I know. It was their wedding day. Not mine. But when Ally contacted me 15 months prior to their wedding day almost immediately following their engagement, I jumped up and down in excitement as she told they were hoping to have their reception at Grace Restaurant in Portland, Maine. I'm a huge Grace fan and I've always wanted to capture a wedding there. Flash forward to this past weekend, and they made that dream come true.

And what a day it was! Ally spent the morning at Knaughty Hair getting dolled up with her hair being styled by Liz (amazing work!) before putting on the finishing touches at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland. Meanwhile, Mark was spending time with his brothers just a few floors away. With the details put together, it was off on the trolley to the quintessential Maine landmark: Portland Headlight. With the couple choosing Maine for their destination wedding, it was such the perfect spot to tie the knot. Combine that with their spinning pinwheels lining the aisle, the hand fasting ritual they did, and their grandparents serving as the ring bearers and flower girl (SO CUTE!)... it could not have been more perfect.

One of the most awesome aspects of Grace Restaurant is just how darn picturesque it is in that area of Portland never mind the Grace itself. I loved that Ally & Mark planned their timeline such that we were able to explore the area while taking more fun portraits of them with their bridal party and still made it back in time for some of their cocktail hour.

Their reception was held in the totally unique hall in the lower level of Grace Restaurant. The windows, the pillars, the chandeliers... what an awesome space! And then you see the food.... queue the jaw drop. It was so delicious! Then there were lots of laughs and a few tears during the toasts by Ally & Mark's siblings and Ally's dad. Reenactment of that leaping dance move from Dirty Dancing during Ally & Mark's first dance (so awesome!). An incredible unfrosted wedding cake that the bride and her family prepared. And even a surprise from their ladies and guys with a prepared dance off. Needless to say, perfect in every way.

We wrapped up the night watching the sunset over Portland's Back Bay. It was a great way to reflect on the day and how fast the past 15 months have flown by.

Ally & Mark, I hope that your trip home as newlyweds went smoothly. Thank you so much for having me there to capture your day for you. It was such a blast! Here is a sneak peek of all the images you have coming your way.

April & Dan :: Winter Engagement Portraits at Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

With just over a week to go until this wedding, I've been saving this blog post for April & Dan just as life gets crazy with the finishing touches for their wedding in Portland, Maine. I'll be honest that one of Dan's good friends won the honors of photographing their wedding, but I got dibs on their winter engagement session with their two adorable pups, Willy & Bella. I'll take it!

I met up wit April and Dan back in February on one of the most gorgeous winter days ever. The crystal clear blue sky poured sunshine upon the snow covered grounds of Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. Although midday is normally not ideal for photography because of the lighting, the white snow acted as amazing reflector and bounced the light everywhere. Including up to these two lovebirds who first met five years ago at Sugarloaf Mountain. But, after hearing their story, I dare say that it was fate that brought them together as their fathers were friends before that faithful night.

Fast forward to our session date together at the always popular Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. The awesome thing about it in the winter is that there are far less tourists than during the summer! The less awesome? Navigating pathways that are unplowed turned... well... interesting for us all. I'm super thankful for my husband buying me tall winter boots so I was able to go off the beaten path and let the lovebirds stay where the snow was a bit firmer. We had a great time wandering around the park with Bella & Willy for a while before we put them back in the comfort of the car so we had some time pup free. What struck me most about the entire day was the way April turns gooey when she looks at Dan and how proud and happy Dan is to have April by his side. It may have taken them years for their paths to finally cross, but I dare say they are stuck together now.

April & Dan, thank you so much for allowing me to capture your engagement portraits for you! I had such a great day and am so happy that YOU are happy with all of the awesome photos we got together. Best of luck with the next week leading up to the big day! I'll be thinking of you both lots as I'm off at another wedding in Massachusetts!

Here is a peek of what April & Dan have from their session with me. There are lots more to see, so hopefully, if you know them personally, they've shared the password for their event on my website with you!

Christine & Joshua's Portland Headlight Engagement Portraits

When a couple contacts me a year and a half in advance of their wedding, it gives us plenty of time to get to know each other more and more prior to the big day. Add in the bride being a loyal Facebook page follower and it is a recipe for feeling like we are great friends. That was just how it felt when I got together with Christine & Joshua for their engagement session at Portland Headlight at Fort Williams Park. Hugs were given out immediately even though we had never met in real life. I'm a hugger. They were huggers. We were one big happy bunch. Together we wandered around the park: Joshua snuggling Christine as close as he could, Christine glowing and basking in Joshua's love, and me making my little happy noises I've become known to make during my shoots when I'm super stoked about what I'm capturing. And, given that I had a really hard time chose what to put in to this set of sneak peek photos, I was one happy camper.

I cannot wait for Christine & Joshua's wedding next September! I'll warn everyone now that I just might tear up watching their two say their vows because I love watching my friends get married!

Nikki & Brad's Portland Headlight and Mariner's Church Banquet Center, Portland, Maine Wedding

If I had to say that one couple would get a whirlwind portrait prize, I dare say Nikki & Brad would win. They were married on a perfectly overcast day in September on the field by Portland Headlight. With what felt like the whole world watching, they proclaimed their love for each other. It made me giggle hearing the crowds of people as they were anxiously awaiting the bride. "Is she out of the limo yet?" "Where is she walking down?" "Are they bringing her down on a golf cart?" And then hearing the gasps as everyone saw Nikki for the first time. She really was gasp worthy, too. The subtle pink shading in the flowers on her dress were perfectly complimented by the gorgeous sash and super hot shoes. Her tiara added just the right amount of sparkle to her gorgeous bridal updo.

Once they were pronounced and the formal portraits were done, away we went on our whirlwind portraits of the two of them. I don't think I've ever been able to hit such a wide variety of portrait spots with a couple! From the pond and gazebo on the Fort Williams grounds to the gorgeous cobblestone streets of the Old Port to the boat dotted shoreline of Portland (just don't look left or right or you'd notice that the location we were in was not, in and of itself, very picturesque)... we hit them all! Once their shoes were changed and bandaids applied, it was off we went to party with their closest friends and family at the awesome Mariner's Church Banquet Center. From the classics (YMCA and We are Family) to the latest hits, this crowd kept the party going long in to the night! It was such a blast!

Nikki & Brad (and family), thank you for letting me be there for your awesome day! I had such a great time celebrating with all of you. You both are marrying in to awesome families!

Jess' Family :: Maternity & Family Portraits at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

I have been slacking off on my blog posts for a while now (although I have been posting sneak peeks over on Facebook). I promise I'll be posting more, especially as I approach my 5 year anniversary for Suzanne Simmons Photography. Yipee!

Before the holidays of 2012 really got in to the swing of things, I got together with Jess and her family for a very brief maternity/family portrait session around Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. It was super chilly out and the wind in the park always makes it feel like the coldest place in the greater Portland area. But, being that Abby's favorite swingset is there, we had to hit it up. I have know Jess since we were both bachelorettes planning our own weddings (longer ago than we care to remember). I took her maternity pictures with her husband, Tim, while they were anxiously awaiting Abby's arrival over three years ago. Now that baby #2 was on the way, we decided it would be the perfect opportunity to capture this time as well. That special time when you still have one baby and it is just the three of you. That time before another little being comes in to the world and your routines are toss aside as you learn how this new family unit works. We had a great time shivering our butts off and racing around the park a bit with each other. I still can't get over how absolutely adorable Jess looks as she is weeks away from her baby boy's arrival.

Here is a sneak peek of what came from our time becoming popsicles. And, coming shortly to another blog post, you'll see the little bundle of joy that came in to the world a short time later. <3

Jessica & Aaron :: Engagement Session in Fort Williams Park, Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Jessica and Aaron may not be walking down the aisle to newlywed-ed bliss until next year, but that didn't stop us from spending an afternoon together at Fort Williams Park in the always lovely Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Although its claim to fame is Portland Headlight, there is a lot more to see at the Park, which we definitely took advantage of. Aaron is the kind of guy that always has a smile on his face, is always on time, and always seems to be scheming something. Jessica is the perfect compliment to Aaron with her kind spirit and calmness that she seems to bring to any situation. Together, they are an absolute blast! It certainly will be an awesome combination and a sure fire way to an excellent wedding in the making. I can't wait for the big day!

Becky & Steve :: Trashing the Dress at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Oh, Becky and Steve.... LOVE YOU GUYS! Becky and Steve tied the knot in Virginia on September 10th and then came to beautiful Maine for their honeymoon. What better way to celebrate this amazing time in their life than to capture more photos while they are glowing newlyweds? We met up at the always amazing Fort Williams Park and Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth to take some "day after" or "trash the dress" photos. I fell in love with their smiles, giggles, and the love story that led them to get married. They are so incredibly perfect for each other. Just a glance at how Steve looks at Becky and your heart will just melt.

Becky and Steve, thank you so much for letting me capture your special time here in Maine. I hope that your honeymoon was everything you were planning for and much more. And I hope that you were able to find the local pub I sent you to! I am looking forward to your next trip to Maine and getting to meet your son. Congratulations on your nuptials!

Abbey & Matthew :: Engagement Session at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Abbey and Matthew are just about as adorable together as they come. Matthew makes Abbey smile and laugh. The way he looks at her could make butter melt in the middle of winter. That look... that is love. That is their love.

They will be tying the knot in Portland in September, but we got together before the big day for an engagement session at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It was a sweltering day, but that didn't stop them one bit. It is a sure sign that they wedding will be absolutely spectacular.

Here is a sneak peek of what they have to look forward to. It is impossible for me to chose a favorite, Abbey!

Brooke + David = Engaged

Brooke and David will be tying the knot at the end of September, but we got together to get some shots with their baby, Remy, while they were up in Maine for the weekend. These two, or should I say three, kept me in stitches the entire time. Remy is lucky to have such awesome parents to call his own. Thanks for hanging out with me, Remy. I'll feed you treats any time! Oh, and can't wait to see you both in a little over a month, Brooke and David!

Here is a sneak peek from our session. Want to see more? Check out my page over on facebook (and don't forget to fan the page while you are there).

Melanie + Sam = Engaged

Melanie and Sam. What can I say? These two love birds are just contagious. Everything about them is. From Sam's giant smile when he looked at Melanie to the way Melanie's eyes twinkled when she looked at Sam. You couldn't help but feel the love. Next year at this time, these two will be married and starting the next big chapter in their lives. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this journey you two are on. You are awesome!

We hit up both Portland Headlight and the Old Port. Here is a sneak peek of our time near the water...

Cheryl & Kevin's Wedding

On June 27th I had the pleasure to capture Cheryl & Kevin's wedding at the Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Despite the iffy weather, the wedding was filled with a warm, tropical feel that was the perfect example of their deep love for each other. Thank you very much for letting me be a part of your special day! The photos from the day are currently being processed, so please check back later to see them all. In the mean time, here is a sneak peek!
